Gemfields will showcase a rare 36-carat ruby in its upcoming June auction, featuring mixed-quality rubies from a newly explored section of its Montepuez mine in Mozambique.
The rubies, extracted from the Montepuez district in Cabo Delgado province, have not previously been offered in significant quantities at auction. According to Gemfields, these stones exhibit a lighter tone and stronger fluorescence due to their lower iron content compared to previously auctioned rubies.
Adrian Banks, Gemfields’ Managing Director of Product and Sales, expressed excitement about the discovery. *“The evolving variety of rubies from Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM) is thrilling. I’m especially eager to see how the 36-carat gem performs—it’s a rare piece that will likely attract strong interest from discerning buyers,”* he said.
MRM, which is 75% owned by Gemfields and 25% by Mozambique’s Mwiriti Limitada, is also expanding its operations. A new 400-ton-per-hour processing plant is underway, expected to triple the mine’s output.
Gemfields emphasized that the increased production capacity is key to ensuring a steady supply of rubies to meet global demand.
The June auction will test the market’s response to these unique, high-quality gems.
