Gold prices have reached an all-time high of $3,280 per ounce, offering residents a unique opportunity to cash in on old or forgotten jewelry.
“Definitely sell it,” said Crystal Abastta, owner of Sparkling City Jewelers. “Right now is the right time because it’s the highest it’s ever been.”
Abastta has been watching gold prices for decades. When her store opened 50 years ago, gold sold for only about $200 per ounce. In the past year alone, prices have climbed by 29 percent.
The rising prices have led many Corpus Christi locals to bring in old jewelry and gold items for cash.
“Inflation and high interest have affected a lot of families,” Abastta explained. “Sometimes they need to sell gold to make ends meet.”
Selling gold is simpler than many people think. According to Abastta, customers don’t need to clean or melt their gold before selling it.
“You can sell gold in any condition,” she said. “Even if you’ve lost one earring or a piece is broken, it still has value.”
Abastta said the store checks the item’s gold content before making an offer. “We’ll look at the carat—like 10 or 14—then weigh the item,” she explained. “Based on the current gold price, we calculate the value and make an offer.”
She added that gold can be more than just jewelry—it can serve as financial security.
“It’s a form of protection,” Abastta said. “If an emergency comes up, you can sell gold to help your family.”
Those interested in knowing what their jewelry is worth are encouraged to visit Sparkling City Jewelers, ask questions, and get their pieces evaluated. The store is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Even if you don’t want to sell, Abastta said her team can help give old pieces new meaning.
“If a piece has lost its emotional value, bring it in,” she said. “We can redesign it into something different and personal.”
