A Tyler woman received a $5,000 shopping spree at Susan Robinson Jewelry on Wednesday after winning a raffle at the annual Tyler Cattle Baron’s Ball, which supports the American Cancer Society.
Jill Powell, who has donated to the fundraiser for years, found out she had won the prize the following day when her grandson broke the news. “I was in total shock. I just kept saying, ‘wow,’” Powell said.
For the past 10 years, Powell has participated in the raffle, but this is her first time winning. The cause is personal for her, as both her father and brother passed away from cancer. Currently, her husband is fighting skin cancer, though she says he is doing well.
Powell explained that her primary reason for donating was to support cancer research, not to win. “I believe strongly in it, and I had no intention of winning. I did it to help with cancer,” she said.
Susan Robinson Jewelry has supported this raffle for nearly 30 years. Blake Tucker, the store’s owner, shared that 100% of the raffle’s proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. “It’s such an honor for us to give back,” Tucker said, noting that cancer impacts everyone in some way.
“My aunt passed away from cancer, and one of my best friends from college is battling it,” Tucker added. “So many people are affected, and it’s a great cause to support.”
As for Powell, she plans to use the shopping spree to buy jewelry and eventually pass it down to her children.
