Italian police have uncovered an unusual method used by a former jewelry factory employee to steal nearly €150,000 worth of gold—by hiding it in his hair.
According to La Repubblica, the 38-year-old man, who previously worked at a gold smelting facility in Switzerland, was caught after a routine document check at a gold-buying shop. When questioned about the origin of a gold strip weighing 250 grams—worth around €23,000—he failed to provide a clear explanation and eventually confessed to the theft.
A search of his home led police to discover additional stolen gold. During interrogation, the man admitted he had concealed the gold in his long dreadlocks to evade detection. He explained that the factory’s metal detectors did not scan the area around his head, which allowed him to smuggle out small amounts of gold undetected over time.
Investigators believe he managed to steal nearly two kilograms of gold over the course of a year, using this method to bypass security. The total value of the stolen metal is estimated at €150,000.
