The jewelry industry is facing a growing shortage of skilled bench jewelers, a challenge that has become increasingly urgent for retail businesses. In response, Jewelers of America (JA) is strengthening its efforts to attract and support new talent through educational initiatives.
One of the organization’s key efforts is the Seymour & Evelyn Holtzman Bench Scholarship, launched last year to help students pursue training in bench jewelry and metalsmithing. Building on the success of the program’s first year, JA is once again inviting applications from students across the United States. The scholarship, created in partnership with the Holtzman family, offers tuition support for students enrolled in accredited programs at colleges, universities, or training schools.
The scholarship is part of JA’s broader mission to grow and sustain the jewelry workforce. It complements JA’s Bench Professional Certification Program, which sets national standards for bench jewelers and promotes career development. JA also offers a detailed guide to careers in the jewelry industry, outlining paths from design and retail to technical craftsmanship. The goal is to provide students with the tools and knowledge they need to build lasting careers.
Last year, three students received the Holtzman Scholarship. They used the funding to attend leading institutions, including the Gemological Institute of America, the New Approach School for Jewelers, and Stuller’s training program. With skilled jewelers in high demand, the scholarship is more than just financial aid—it connects students to real opportunities in a vital industry.
“My parents, Seymour and Evelyn Holtzman, always believed that service and craftsmanship are at the heart of the jewelry industry,” said Steven Holtzman, Vice Chairman of CD Peacock. “This scholarship honors my father’s legacy and helps future jewelers start strong careers.”
The scholarship is aimed especially at low-income students, making specialized training more accessible to those who may otherwise be left out. By focusing on equity and opportunity, JA continues to support the growth, sustainability, and diversity of the industry.
Applications for this year’s scholarship are open through June 12.
