The Bangladesh Jewellers Association (BAJUS) has decided to suspend its countrywide programme to shut down all jewelry shops.
In a press release issued on Thursday, May 29, BAJUS said it is halting the protest in hopes of receiving justice through a fair investigation into the arrest of its vice president, Md Ripnul Hasan.
The association warned that it may announce fresh protest programmes if Ripnul’s name is not removed from the case and justice is not ensured.
On Wednesday, May 28, BAJUS had announced an indefinite shutdown of all jewelry shops across Bangladesh. The decision came in protest against Ripnul’s arrest and demanded his immediate and unconditional release.
Central leaders of BAJUS, including acting president Gulzar Ahmed and general secretary Badal Chandra Roy, condemned the arrest. They described the case against Ripnul as “false and harassing” and expressed deep concern over the incident.
Law enforcement officials detained Ripnul Hasan from his business premises in Tatibazar, Dhaka, on Wednesday evening.
