As global markets brace for the effects of rising U.S. tariffs, the 44th edition of the Oro Arezzo Jewelry Show has spotlighted the resilience and creativity of Italy’s jewelry industry.
Held recently at the Fiere e Congressi exhibition center in Arezzo, the international trade fair welcomed participants from over 100 countries. Despite ongoing economic uncertainty and record-high gold prices, Italian designers and manufacturers showcased their ability to adapt and innovate. The event was organized by the Italian Exhibition Group (IEG), with 84% of exhibitors representing Italian craftsmanship.
Under the theme “Shaping the Idea of Jewelry,” the four-day show featured more than just stunning pieces. It also highlighted new technologies and materials set to influence the industry’s future.
The fair’s Tech Hall drew considerable attention. Designers and jewelers explored the latest manufacturing tools and equipment, designed to streamline production and boost efficiency. Around 400 buyers from 60 countries attended this year’s event. Thanks to support from the Italian Trade Commission and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the number of international visitors rose by 9% compared to last year.
Modern Electrum™ Alloy Debuts to Global Audience
One of the most talked-about innovations at the show was the debut of a new Italian-made precious metal alloy: Modern Electrum™. Developed by Alessi Domenico S.p.A. in collaboration with Legor Group S.p.A. and Diamonds de Canada, this alloy offers both beauty and practicality. It is hypoallergenic, highly resistant to oxidation, and more affordable per ounce than gold.
Modern Electrum™ draws inspiration from an ancient material. “This is a 21st-century version of Electrum, a naturally occurring blend of gold and silver once used by the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans,” said Alice Alessi, a fourth-generation member of the Alessi family. She presented the alloy and several sample chains during the show.
The alloy combines gold, silver, platinum, rhodium, and palladium with non-precious metals. It contains no nickel or copper. All precious metals used in Modern Electrum™ are certified as 100% sustainably sourced by the Responsible Jewelry Council (RJC). Alessi also noted that the non-precious components are fully recyclable, ensuring the alloy’s environmental sustainability.
According to Alessi, the alloy performs well in production. It offers strong mechanical properties, making it easy to work with. “Gold gives the alloy its ductility and unique shine. Silver adds malleability and brightness. Palladium ensures durability and protects against oxidation,” she explained.
To further enhance the jewelry’s look and lifespan, Legor Group developed two electroplating finishes for Modern Electrum™. This process allows the metal to be presented in either white or yellow tones. Diamonds de Canada’s Lands collection already features Modern Electrum™, setting a possible trend for future high-end designs.
