The oldest business in Cherokee County is closing soon. JoAnn Jackson, owner of J&J Jewelry in downtown Rusk, is retiring after 70 years in business. At 91 years old, Jackson is ready to start a new chapter in her life. On Thursday morning, the Rusk Chamber of Commerce, city officials, and Jackson’s family held a surprise celebration to honor her long career.
“Retiring at 91 is amazing! Everyone in this town loves her. We wanted to show her the same kindness she has given to us over the years,” said Kelli Dover, Chair of the Rusk Chamber of Commerce Board.
Jackson received proclamations from the City of Rusk, the Chamber, and State Senator Robert Nichols. A native of Longview, she opened J&J Jewelry in September 1954, making it the oldest business in Cherokee County.
“It has been a joy to run the business all these years and watch different generations come and go,” Jackson said.
She said her favorite part was meeting many people and taking part in special events.
“The friendships I’ve made mean a lot. I especially enjoyed helping brides pick out jewelry for their wedding showers,” she added.
In retirement, Jackson plans to volunteer her time in the Rusk community. She also shared advice for future entrepreneurs: “If you treat people the way you want to be treated, you will have a successful business,” she said.
J&J Jewelry will close on May 31 when Jackson officially retires.
