A cemetery worker in Fishers was arrested late Monday night after he admitted to digging up a grave to steal jewelry he had buried earlier that week.
The incident occurred at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, where Fishers police were patrolling when they spotted a suspicious vehicle parked nearby. Officers approached the vehicle, which was unoccupied, and noticed a shotgun and other suspicious items in plain view.
While checking the vehicle, officers saw a man covered in dirt approaching from a wooded area near the cemetery. The man, later identified as Seth Davidson, 30, of Indianapolis, admitted to officers that he had been digging up a grave in search of a gold ring.
Davidson explained that he worked at Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens and had buried an urn containing the ring earlier in the week. He said he couldn’t stop thinking about the ring and planned to retrieve it and sell it at a pawn shop. Davidson admitted to digging up the grave, but when he saw police around his vehicle, he hid the ring behind a dumpster.
Davidson led police to the ring and showed them the grave he had disturbed. He was arrested and charged with theft, criminal trespassing, disturbing a grave, and cemetery mischief.
Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens confirmed that this was the only grave that had been tampered with. The cemetery’s operator, Flanner Buchanan, said the employee involved in the incident has been fired. Ben Upton, vice president of advanced planning at Flanner Buchanan, called the incident “very unfortunate” but said the ring had been recovered. The company is working with the family of the deceased to address the situation.
