Gemfields will showcase a rare 36-carat fine-quality ruby at its upcoming auction in June 2025. The gemstone is expected to attract strong interest from buyers around the world due to its exceptional size and quality.
This auction will also mark a new chapter for the company. For the first time, rubies from a newly developed section of its Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM) concession in Mozambique will be available in meaningful quantities. This area had not significantly contributed to past auctions.
The rubies from this zone display unique traits. They have a lighter tone and stronger fluorescence. Experts say this is due to the lower iron content in the stones. These differences allow buyers to explore new shades of rubies, expanding their collections and market offerings.
Montepuez Ruby Mining is located in the Montepuez district of Cabo Delgado province in Mozambique. The site sits on one of the most important ruby deposits discovered in recent years. The concession covers nearly 35,000 hectares. Gemfields owns 75% of the project, while the remaining 25% is held by local company Mwiriti Limitada.
Adrian Banks, Gemfields’ Managing Director for Product and Sales, shared his excitement about the evolving ruby production. “It is exciting to see the variety of rubies now coming from Montepuez Ruby Mining,” he said. “I’m especially looking forward to seeing how the 36-carat ruby performs at auction. A stone of this size and quality is incredibly rare, and I expect strong competition among experienced buyers.”
Gemfields has built a reputation as a reliable name in the coloured gemstone market. Its auctions are known for being consistent and transparent. All proceeds from the sales are returned to Mozambique, highlighting the company’s commitment to ethical sourcing and responsible business practices.
Looking ahead, Gemfields is expanding its operations. A new ore processing plant with a capacity of 400 tonnes per hour is nearing completion. Once online, the facility will triple the processing capacity at Montepuez. This upgrade will help the company meet growing global demand by ensuring a steady supply of rubies across a wide range of quality grades.
