The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has evaluated over 30 rare and historically important jewels in preparation for Christie’s upcoming Magnificent Jewels auction, scheduled for June 17 in New York. Among these treasures is the Marie-Thérèse Pink, a 10.38-carat diamond graded as Fancy Purple-Pink by GIA. This gemstone is linked to one of history’s most famous royal figures, Queen Marie-Antoinette of France, and her daughter, Duchess Marie-Thérèse of Angoulême.
Christie’s estimates the value of the ring between $3 million and $5 million. It stands out for its vivid purple-pink color, unusual modified brilliant kite cut, and noble lineage. The diamond likely originated in India during the mid-1700s—a region where purple-pink diamonds are especially rare. The gem is believed to have been passed down from Queen Marie-Antoinette to her daughter and later to her niece, Duchess Marie-Thérèse of Chambord. Its royal history and rare qualities make it exceptional both as a gemstone and as a historical artifact.
Tom Moses, GIA’s Executive Vice President and Chief Laboratory and Research Officer, highlighted the organization’s role in authenticating the diamond. “GIA evaluated the Marie-Thérèse Pink in advance of the auction, providing a detailed gemological assessment that confirms the diamond’s color origin and internal characteristics,” he said. “Through our evaluations, GIA helps record the properties and history of these notable diamonds.”
In addition to the Marie-Thérèse Pink, GIA analyzed more than 30 other remarkable jewels featured in the auction. One notable item is an unmounted diamond weighing over 60 carats, praised for its symmetry, clarity, and brilliance. Another is a pendant necklace that showcases classic European design and craftsmanship.
With rising global interest in colored diamonds and the closure of major sources such as Australia’s Argyle Mine, gems like the Marie-Thérèse Pink have become even more valuable. These stones are not only rare natural creations but also carry the weight of centuries of history and heritage.
