A family visit to a temple turned into a nightmare for a diamond merchant when a monkey ran off with a bag containing jewellery worth over Rs 20 lakh. The incident happened near the Thakur Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan on Friday.
Abhishek Agarwal, a diamond trader from Aligarh, was walking with his family towards their parked car after offering prayers. Suddenly, a monkey from a nearby troop snatched a handbag from his hand. The bag contained high-value diamond jewellery.
The area is known for its monkey population, which often snatches food, glasses, and other belongings from tourists. However, this incident caused serious concern due to the value of the stolen items.
Agarwal and his family tried several tricks, including offering food to lure the monkey, but nothing worked. Eventually, he reported the incident to the police.
Circle Officer (Sadar) Sandeep Singh said police teams worked for eight hours to track the monkey. They eventually managed to corner it and safely recover the handbag.
“The bag was returned to the owner without any damage,” Singh confirmed.
Authorities in Mathura-Vrindavan have been working to manage the growing monkey menace, especially in areas popular with pilgrims and tourists.
