More than 40 pieces of jewelry owned by the late television icon Mary Tyler Moore will be featured in an auction next week in New York.
Doyle’s June 4 auction, titled the Collection of Mary Tyler Moore, includes over 300 items from Moore’s personal collection. The items come from her elegant home in Greenwich, Connecticut, as well as from her earlier residences in Manhattan and Millbrook, New York.
Among the jewelry, the most notable piece is a diamond bracelet. It is estimated to sell for between $8,000 and $12,000. The bracelet features 7.95 carats of baguette and round diamonds, along with 2.1 carats of modified square-cut diamonds set in platinum. Another highly valued item is a gold cage cuff by Paloma Picasso for Tiffany & Co.
The auction also includes other pieces from Tiffany and several items by Cartier.
Beyond jewelry, the sale offers a wide range of items. These include fine art, furniture, silver, decorative objects, and memorabilia. Notable items are the large letter “M” that hung on the wall of Mary Richards’ apartment in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and an unused ticket to the taping of the show’s final episode.
Art highlights include portraits of Moore by Peter Max and Everett Raymond Kinstler. There are also two sculptures by Italian artist Mimmo Paladino. Original drawings by Al Hirschfeld of both The Dick Van Dyke Show—where Moore played Laura Petrie—and The Mary Tyler Moore Show will be offered. A rare Polaroid photograph by Annie Leibovitz, showing Moore and Dick Van Dyke together, is also part of the collection.
Mary Tyler Moore (1936–2017) became a symbol of modern womanhood in the 1970s through her role as TV news producer Mary Richards. Over her career, she won seven Emmy Awards, a Tony Award, three Golden Globes, and was nominated for an Academy Award. Besides acting, Moore was a dedicated philanthropist who supported diabetes research and animal welfare causes.
