An exhibition showcasing centuries-old stage jewelry from the Comédie-Française, France’s national theater, has opened at the L’ECOLE China Jewelry Art Academy in Shanghai. The event brings to life the rich theatrical heritage of one of the world’s most historic theater companies.
Running from May 1 to October 7, the “Comédie-Française Stage Jewelry Exhibition” is being held at the UNESCO-awarded Twin Villas on 796 Huaihai Middle Road, in central Shanghai. The exhibition features over 100 pieces of stage jewelry, along with documents and artifacts dating from the 17th to the 20th century.
On display are objects that played key roles in past productions—glittering crowns that once represented royal authority, jeweled daggers used to depict betrayal and danger, and ornate costumes adorned with exotic embroidery. These items tell the story of performances that have graced the Comédie-Française stage for over 300 years.
Founded in 1680 in Paris, the Comédie-Française is recognized as the oldest national theater still in operation. Known for its classical roots and continuous innovation, the theater has built a reputation for blending traditional French plays with modern interpretations.
In 2017, the Comédie-Française began a collaboration with L’ECOLE, a school supported by a luxury jewelry brand, to restore its historic stage jewelry collection. Lise Macdonald, director of the Paris Opera, explained that the goal was to preserve the pieces not just as props, but as historical records. “We started working with them to restore their collection from a historical point of view, using both modern technology and traditional techniques to document every item,” she said.
This exhibition offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience the craftsmanship, symbolism, and dramatic power of stage jewelry that has shaped French theatrical culture for centuries.
