Catherine Weiss has donated $10,000 to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock to create a new fund supporting students in the fine arts program. The Jewelry and Metalsmith Equipment Fund will help purchase and replace tools and materials for students studying jewelry and metalsmithing.
Weiss, a professional jeweler, said her personal experience inspired her to give.
“I’m a jeweler myself, and I know what it’s like to be a young student without the resources you need,” she said. “They already have a great facility and excellent teachers. This fund will help students get the equipment they need to grow.”
The Metalsmithing and Jewelry program at UA Little Rock teaches students core techniques such as fabrication, forging, casting, and finishing. Students work on hands-on projects, research new ideas, and take part in critiques to improve their craftsmanship and creativity. The program helps them create both functional and artistic pieces.
Weiss, who took summer classes at UA Little Rock as a young adult, has stayed connected to the university and the local arts scene. She now divides her time between Little Rock and France, and continues to advocate for arts education.
“This gift is all about helping the students,” Weiss said. “I wish them all the best and look forward to seeing their next exhibition.”
Weiss emphasized the importance of giving students a space to express themselves.
“Having the right facilities is fantastic. I think it’s important for students to be able to express their ideas through their art,” she said.
Lydia Martin, a visiting assistant professor of metals at UA Little Rock, said the donation will have a lasting impact on student success and creativity.
“As a lifelong learner, I know how critical it is to have access to the right tools,” Martin said. “Tools don’t just teach techniques — they unlock creative potential. The Jewelry and Metalsmith Equipment Fund gives students the chance to bring their ideas to life.”
The fund will directly benefit students in the School of Art and Design by giving them access to professional-grade tools and high-quality materials. This support will allow them to refine their skills and explore new artistic directions.
