Fred, the French jewelry house known as the “sunshine jeweler,” is turning back to its roots with a new high jewelry collection that celebrates light in all its brilliance.
Unveiled in May, the collection made its red carpet debut at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, worn by French actresses Mélanie Laurent and Joséphine Japy. But the inspiration behind these new creations goes deeper than glamour.
At a private preview in Paris in April, Valérie Samuel, vice president and artistic director at Fred, explained that the 19-piece collection explores two key themes.
“These two collections complete each other by evoking two emblematic moments that have shaped Fred as the sunshine jeweler — the birth of the house in 1936 and the radiance of the ‘Soleil d’Or’ diamond,” Samuel said.
The first collection, titled “1936,” draws inspiration from the year Fred Samuel, then just 28 years old, founded the brand. He opened his first boutique on Rue Royale in Paris. These designs feature colorful gemstones, pearls, and subtle Art Deco influences.
One standout piece is an articulated necklace. Its central motif mimics the arched arcades of Rue Royale using grain- and claw-set diamonds. It is crowned with a 7.13-carat cushion-cut Royal Blue sapphire from Sri Lanka.
Another highlight is a choker set with a 3.63-carat pigeon blood ruby from Mozambique. Interlaced diamond patterns guide the eye toward the vibrant center stone. A similar design frames a 4.24-carat Colombian emerald in a separate piece.
Fred also paid tribute to the house’s early link with pearl pioneer Mikimoto. A long sautoir necklace features pearls with a soft pink hue that recalls this historic partnership.
The second part of the collection is called “Soleil d’Or Sunrise.” It pays tribute to the house’s famous yellow diamond, the original “Soleil d’Or.” In these nine pieces, yellow diamonds take center stage, bringing warmth and brilliance to the designs.
Together, the two collections reflect Fred’s history and identity — rooted in Paris, shaped by rare gemstones, and always chasing the light.
