Experts warn that dirty jewelry may carry more germs than a toilet seat.
Dr. Adrian Bell, a hygiene specialist, and fashion experts from Edit Suits say that not cleaning rings, earrings, or other jewelry can expose people to harmful bacteria.
A recent study found that jewelry worn daily can become very grimy, especially when it is rarely cleaned.
Dr. Bell collected swabs from rings and earrings worn by over 100 people. The results showed bacterial levels up to 428% higher than those found on average household toilet seats.
“We found colonies of staphylococcus, yeast, and even fecal bacteria,” Dr. Bell said. “The back of earring studs was one of the dirtiest spots because dirt and residue build up there without being noticed.”
The study also revealed that jewelry worn close to the skin is more likely to carry dangerous bacteria. This is particularly true for pieces worn during sleep, exercise, or showering.
Dermatologists warn that neglecting to clean jewelry can cause skin problems. These include rashes, ear infections, acne flare-ups, and small abscesses in pierced areas.
“People wear these items against their skin, sometimes inside piercings, but many have never cleaned them,” Dr. Bell added.
Experts recommend cleaning jewelry at least once a week if worn daily. If jewelry is exposed to sweat, makeup, or moisturizers, it should be cleaned even more often. Removing jewelry before exercise, showering, or sleeping is also advised.
Here are some cleaning tips:
- Earrings: Wipe with an alcohol-free antiseptic weekly, and soak in warm soapy water every two weeks.
- Rings: Use a soft toothbrush to gently clean under the band once a week.
- Bracelets and Necklaces: Wipe monthly with a clean cloth and disinfect clasps every couple of weeks.
An Edit Suits spokesperson said, “This study was eye-opening. It reminds us that cleaning your jewelry is as important as other hygiene habits. A simple weekly clean can prevent skin issues and keep your accessories looking their best.”
