George Duffy, the owner of George and Company Diamond Jewelers in Dickson City, has announced his decision to retire and close the business after 17 years of service. This marks the end of a long career that began when Duffy was just 11 years old, helping out at his family’s jewelry store.
Duffy’s journey into the jewelry business started early. By 12, his father had taught him how to engrave jewelry, and by 16, he was working on his own jewelry bench. In 2008, Duffy opened his own store, where he spent nearly two decades helping customers celebrate special moments with custom jewelry.
Now, at the age of 53, Duffy says it’s time for a change. “I want to spend time just being,” he said, looking forward to relaxing on his front porch. He also plans to visit his two adult children, whom he recently saw off to college.
The decision to close the store comes after the loss of Duffy’s wife, Kim, in 2021. Kim had worked alongside George at the store, and her passing made it harder for him to manage the business on his own.
Though Duffy once dreamed of becoming a psychologist or a carpenter, he found his passion in jewelry. He still uses the same jewelry bench from his early years, with “all the burn marks” to show for his years of craftsmanship.
Throughout his career, Duffy has been dedicated to not just selling jewelry, but creating pieces that hold deep personal meaning for his customers. One such example was a necklace he made to hold the ashes of a customer’s mother, keeping the ashes hidden at the back so the customer could always feel close to her loved one.
Duffy has not set a specific date for the store’s closure but is currently holding a “going out of business” sale with significant discounts. The sale provides an opportunity for customers to purchase high-quality jewelry and for the community to say farewell to a beloved local business.
As he reflects on his time as a jeweler, Duffy says he will miss the personal connections with customers and the chance to express his creativity through design. “The one-on-one experience is what I’ll miss the most,” he said.
