NEW YORK – Sotheby’s, the distinguished auction house, is poised to unveil what is claimed to be the largest, highest-quality Paraíba tourmaline ever to grace an auction stage. Dubbed “The Blue Lagoon,” this captivating 93.94-carat gem will take center stage at the upcoming Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels Sale, scheduled for November 8 in Geneva.

Anticipated to command a remarkable price range of 1.3 million-2.5 million CHF, equivalent to $1.4 million-$2.7 million, “The Blue Lagoon” boasts an illustrious lineage. This Cuprian tourmaline hails from Mozambique, a nation that has not only established itself as the world’s foremost producer of this exquisite gemstone but has also become a prominent source for top-tier colored stones, according to Sotheby’s. Notably, earlier this summer in New York, a 55.22-carat ruby from Mozambique fetched an astonishing sum exceeding $30 million at a Sotheby’s auction.

Paraíba tourmalines, a distinct subset of Cuprian tourmalines, originated from the Paraíba region of Brazil during the 1980s, but the nomenclature is now assigned to greenish-blue specimens displaying vivid to profound color saturation, regardless of their origin.

This particular variety has earned a reputation as one of the most coveted gemstones on a global scale, frequently surpassing the prices achieved by fine sapphires, rubies, and emeralds. Top-tier Paraíba tourmalines are renowned for their electrifying blue hue, though they tend to be relatively petite and harbor a notable degree of internal imperfections.

Sotheby’s emphasizes the exceptional attributes of “The Blue Lagoon,” noting its remarkable dimensions, pristine clarity, and enchanting turquoise color—all of which have been achieved without any heat treatment. In the words of Sotheby’s, it evokes the crystalline waters of a tropical paradise.

“The Blue Lagoon” takes its place as the centerpiece of a bespoke high jewelry necklace, crafted exclusively for this extraordinary stone by the venerable European Maison Adler Joailliers, with a history spanning 130 years. The necklace boasts a cascading arrangement of over 76 carats of round, marquise, and pear-shaped diamonds, further enhancing the splendor of the Paraíba tourmaline.

In an effort to bolster its authenticity and credentials, “The Blue Lagoon” is accompanied by a Bellerophon report brochure and an SSEF report, both attesting to its exceptional size and quality. The original design sketch for the necklace is also included, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship behind this unique creation.

The forthcoming auction is part of Sotheby’s Luxury Week, a biannual series held in Hong Kong, New York, and Geneva, offering a diverse array of lots encompassing jewelry, watches, handbags, and accessories.
