June 14, 2025 — Rolex has introduced a bold new version of its GMT-Master II 126715CHNR, commonly known as the “Root Beer,” this time featuring a striking dial made from tiger iron—a unique semi-precious stone that marks a daring step in luxury watch design.
At first glance, early leaked images gave the impression of a traditional tiger’s eye dial. However, closer inspection revealed something more complex. The new dial is made from tiger iron, a natural composite of tiger’s eye, red jasper, and black hematite. This blend of materials gives each dial a one-of-a-kind appearance, with intense striations and a shifting palette of browns, reds, grays, yellows, and even greens.
Classic Construction with a Twist
The GMT-Master II is a familiar piece for many collectors. This 40mm model retains all the beloved features of the GMT-Master II line, but with an 18k Everose gold case that adds noticeable heft. The two-tone black and brown 24-hour Cerachrom bezel insert brings a vintage touch that complements the warm tone of the Everose gold.
As expected, the watch is built with the brand’s high standards: a Triplock screw-down crown, 100 meters of water resistance, and the signature Oyster bracelet equipped with the Oysterlock clasp and toolless Easylink extension system.
A Dial Unlike Any Other
Tiger iron, the star feature of this release, is highly polished and naturally patterned. The light plays across its surface in unpredictable ways. While some may find the mix of colors jarring, others might view its boldness as part of its charm. Some observers have compared it to volcanic landscapes or otherworldly imagery. In any case, the dynamic texture and color shifts ensure each dial offers a unique visual experience.
Proven Performance
Inside, the watch is powered by Rolex’s automatic Caliber 3285. This movement is known for its “flyer” GMT functionality, allowing the local hour hand to be adjusted independently. It delivers a 70-hour power reserve and operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour. It also features Rolex’s Chronergy escapement, a Parachrom hairspring, and Paraflex shock absorbers. As a Superlative Chronometer, the movement is rated to within -2/+2 seconds per day.
Price and Positioning
The Rolex GMT-Master II 126715CHNR with a tiger iron dial is priced at $49,400 USD. This marks a significant premium over previous versions, including the white-gold meteorite dial edition. Rolex attributes this price increase to the use of the rare and visually complex tiger iron.
Though the colors may not appeal to all tastes, Rolex’s gamble on uniqueness will likely attract collectors looking for something new. While some may question the long-term appeal of such a dial, others will see it as a testament to Rolex’s ongoing experimentation with unconventional materials.
