On Thursday at Cannes, Helen Mirren dazzled the crowd by wearing more than 400 carats of gemstones—just counting her necklace alone.
Mirren attended the premiere of Colors of Time dressed in a high-neck black gown. The dress featured puffed sleeves and a long teal sash trailing behind her. She completed her look with a floral headpiece and exquisite jewelry by Margot McKinney.
Her statement piece, the Marina Collier necklace, held two large green beryl stones weighing 241 and 109 carats each. The necklace also included a 65-carat aquamarine. Surrounding these large gems were clusters of green beryls, aquamarines, tourmalines, sapphires, diamonds, paraibas, and tsavorites (a type of green garnet). Between the stones were 29 rare baroque Australian South Sea pearls. Mirren also wore matching earrings that complemented the necklace perfectly.
Recently, Mirren shared her honest thoughts about the James Bond series. While promoting her new show MobLand, she said she is a “massive fan” of Pierce Brosnan, her co-star who once played James Bond. However, she admitted she never liked the Bond films themselves.
In an interview with The Standard in March, Mirren explained, “The whole series of James Bond, it was not my thing. It really wasn’t. I never liked James Bond. I never liked the way women were in James Bond.”
Mirren also has a personal connection to the franchise. Her late cousin, Tania Mallet, played Bond girl Tilly Masterson.
She added, “The whole concept of James Bond is drenched and born out of profound sexism. Women have always been a major and incredibly important part of the Secret Service, they always have been. And very brave. If you hear about what women did in the French Resistance, they’re amazingly, unbelievably courageous.”
