Hong Kong Auction Sees Record-Breaking Sale of Pink Diamond

by Madonna

A new world record was set in Hong Kong on Friday with the sale of a pink diamond for $49.9 million. Auctioned by Sotheby’s Hong Kong, the 11.15-carat Williamson Pink Star diamond fetched a staggering price, surpassing all previous records for the highest price per carat at auction.

Initially estimated at $21 million, the Williamson Pink Star exceeded expectations with its final sale price. Named after two iconic pink diamonds, the Williamson Pink Star follows in the footsteps of the 23.60-carat Williamson diamond, gifted to Queen Elizabeth II in 1947, and the 59.60-carat Pink Star diamond, which set a record in 2017 by selling for $71.2 million.

This diamond, the second-largest of its kind to be auctioned, underscores the rarity and value of pink diamonds, renowned as some of the most precious colored gems in the world.

Commenting on the sale, Tobias Kormind, managing director of 77 Diamonds, remarked, “This is an astounding result, proving the resilience of top diamonds in a shaky economy.” He emphasized the enduring appeal of high-quality diamonds as investments, noting their consistent performance even during times of economic uncertainty. “Some of the world’s highest quality diamonds have seen prices double over the last 10 years,” he added.
