A rare sapphire and diamond ring, known as the “Regent Kashmir,” became the highlight of a recent auction in Hong Kong, fetching US$9.5 million (A$14.61 million).
The 35-carat antique cushion-shaped sapphire, set in a band of round diamonds, was sold at Christie’s Magnificent Jewels sale. The price matched its pre-sale estimate. Mined in Kashmir, India, the sapphire is particularly valuable, as the region’s mines were only active between 1882 and 1887.
Other standout pieces included a 4.08-carat Fancy Vivid purplish-pink diamond, also set in a diamond band. It sold for US$5.3 million (A$8.15 million). Another notable sapphire ring, featuring a 28-carat Burmese cushion-shaped brilliant-cut sapphire, sold for US$2.5 million (A$3.85 million), nearly doubling its pre-sale estimate.
The auction’s total reached US$48 million (A$73.83 million) and included pieces from renowned designers such as Cartier, Tiffany, and Bulgari.
