A family-run jewelry store in Simi Valley is reeling after a calculated overnight burglary left the owners devastated and uncertain about their future.
Just before midnight on May 25, 2025, multiple suspects broke into Five Star Jewelry and Watch Repair on Cochran Street. The burglars gained access by entering through a neighboring coffee shop. Using tools, they drilled a hole through the roof, then broke through a shared wall between the two businesses.
Surveillance footage submitted to KTLA shows one suspect crawling across the floor to avoid setting off motion sensors. Moments later, he spray-painted the camera lens, effectively disabling it and cutting off any further video evidence.
KTLA 5 reporter Jennifer McGraw said the thieves “seemed to know exactly what they were doing.” After entering the coffee shop, they drilled through six inches of drywall to access the jewelry store and successfully opened the safe.
Store owner Jonathan Yusuf, fighting back tears, recounted the experience.
“My family lost everything,” he said. “It’s a shock — my father’s retirement, my own future. I have a young family and three daughters. It’s hard to even think about rebuilding.”
His father, Jacob Yusuf, 71, founded the store decades ago. Jonathan took over the business in 2015. The elder Yusuf was preparing for retirement when the break-in occurred.
“He was so close to retiring,” Jonathan said. “I had just ordered a ‘closed’ sign for the shop on Monday, so he wouldn’t need to come in anymore.”
Jacob Yusuf expressed heartbreak over the loss.
“This store was my life,” he said. “They took everything. I’m 71. I can’t rebuild what I spent a lifetime creating.”
The suspects took both merchandise and valuable items belonging to customers. That, according to the family, is their greatest concern.
“I’m trying to help Jonathan keep the business going because I gave it to him,” Jacob said. “We just want to recover the customers’ belongings. That’s what matters now.”
As of Tuesday, Simi Valley Police had not released any suspect descriptions. Authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward.
The Yusuf family is left with more questions than answers — and a hole in the ceiling that marks not just a break-in, but a breaking point.
Anyone with information related to the case is urged to contact the Simi Valley Police Department.
