The New Westminster Police Department is warning residents about a series of recent jewelry thefts involving scammers targeting seniors.
According to the police, fraudsters are offering fake jewelry while stealing genuine pieces from unsuspecting victims.
On March 18, a senior was approached by a suspected scammer in the mid-afternoon near 7th Avenue and 18th Street. Police say the fraudster engaged the victim in a brief conversation, then gave them fake gold jewelry while taking the real jewelry the victim was wearing. The stolen items are valued at approximately $3,000.
Authorities believe this is part of a growing trend where fraudsters approach seniors in public. They distract their victims, then steal from them or convince them to visit an ATM for an illicit transaction.
In early April, police reported another incident where a woman allegedly attempted to steal a gold necklace from another woman near 8th Street and Royal Avenue around 11 a.m.
The New Westminster Police Department is actively investigating the March 18 incident. They are asking anyone with information about the suspect to come forward.
“If you notice suspicious activity like this, please call 9-1-1 immediately, as it could be a theft in progress,” urged Sgt. Andrew Leaver.
